The Hidden PTSD Behind Her Purpose: Called, but Triggered

christian christian women women empowerment women in the ministry Jun 03, 2025

You finally said yes to the calling. You launched the business, stepped into ministry, started mentoring other women. From the outside, it looks like purpose is winning.

But behind the spreadsheets, prayer calls, and Instagram reels… something still doesn’t feel right.

You’re waking up anxious. Your body flinches at sounds no one else notices. You’re struggling to focus, sometimes forgetting entire conversations. And yet—you keep going, because the calling doesn’t stop for pain.

The truth is, you may be dealing with PTSD.

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is a mental health condition that can develop after experiencing or witnessing a traumatic event. It’s not just about what happened in your past—it’s about how your mind and body continue to respond, long after the danger has passed. Not everyone who’s been through trauma develops PTSD. But if you have, you’re not weak… you’re not broken… and you’re not alone.

This series is for the woman who’s building something God-breathed while quietly managing flashbacks, fatigue, and fear she can’t always explain. It’s for the woman who wonders why she's still affected—when everyone else assumes she’s already healed.

And as we honor PTSD Awareness Month this June, we want to make space for you. Not just to lead, not just to serve—but to breathe. To be understood. And to be reminded that healing isn’t a detour from your calling. Sometimes, it’s the foundation for it.

1. You’re Called—But So Is Your Nervous System

You can be deeply anointed and still deeply dysregulated.

PTSD isn’t just a memory—it’s how your body responds to the memory. It’s the racing heart, the clenched jaw, the sweaty palms when you hear a phrase or smell a scent that takes you back. It’s your brain going into overdrive, convinced it’s still in danger, even when you’re just trying to record a podcast or lead a team call.

You might pray. You might fast. You might journal. But still, your nervous system feels like it’s working against you—and you don’t know why.

Let me say this clearly: God is not disappointed in your symptoms. PTSD doesn’t mean you’re faithless. It means your body and brain have been trying to protect you. But they were never meant to be your Savior.

Healing from PTSD is not just spiritual—it’s emotional, mental, and physical. It’s okay to seek help for all of it.

“The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.” — Matthew 26:41
(And weak doesn’t mean unworthy.)

2. You’ve Mastered the Mask—But It’s Costing You

The women who carry PTSD often become masters at looking okay. You know how to lead worship with a smile. You know how to pitch your business with confidence. You know how to serve everyone else, even while you’re silently unraveling.

But behind the polished posts and professional exterior is a woman who's fighting to keep it together.

You’ve taught yourself to minimize your pain, to not “make it about you,” to just “keep going.” But the cost of masking is high: emotional exhaustion, disconnection, burnout. And often, a quiet shame that whispers, “If they knew what I was really going through, they wouldn’t follow me.”

But the truth is—your mask doesn’t glorify God. Your healing does.
And healing begins when you stop pretending you're not hurting.

3. The Flashbacks Don’t Care That You’re in a Business Meeting

PTSD doesn’t respect calendars.

You can be in the middle of coaching a client or sitting in a vision-planning session, and suddenly a sound, tone, or phrase pulls you back to a place you thought you’d left behind.

You’re sweating. Your heart’s racing. You lose your train of thought. You’re dissociating. You’re trying to get through the meeting without anyone noticing—but inside, you’re spiraling.

This is the quiet war so many women fight. And it’s not laziness. It’s not lack of focus. It’s trauma still lodged in the body, triggered by the unspoken.

If this is you, I want to remind you: you’re not broken. You’re not unqualified. And you don’t have to hide anymore. There is room in the Kingdom—and in your calendar—for you to heal, slowly, deeply, and without apology.

4. You’re Exhausted—And It’s Not Just Burnout

Maybe you’ve been calling it burnout. Maybe you’ve been blaming your hormones, your schedule, or your “lack of discipline.” But deep down, you know this exhaustion feels different.

This is soul-tired. Trauma-tired. PTSD-tired.

The kind of tired that sleep can’t fix. The kind of fatigue that comes from constantly being on edge, overanalyzing every reaction, bracing for rejection, trying to keep up the image of the strong, capable woman you’ve always had to be.

You don’t need another productivity hack.
You need permission to rest—without guilt.

“Come to me, all who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.” — Matthew 11:28

Jesus isn’t just calling you to do the work. He’s calling you to let Him hold what hurts.

Final Thoughts: There’s No Shame in Needing Help

You’re not crazy.
You’re not a fraud.
And you’re not too far gone.

If PTSD has been quietly shaping your leadership journey, your relationships, or your view of yourself, this is your sign: you don’t have to carry it alone anymore.

This blog series will walk with you—not to fix you, but to remind you that you’re seen, you’re safe, and healing is available.

You can be both wounded and worthy, triggered and chosen, not okay and still called.

This month, we honor PTSD Awareness by honoring you.
You’ve carried enough in silence. It’s time to speak, to rest, to heal.
